MAJ JOHN CULBERTSON EGGER JR.

Return to Service Member Profiles

On August 15, 1994, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting (JTF-FA, now DPAA) identified the remains of Major John Culbertson Egger Jr., missing from the Vietnam War.

Major Egger entered the U.S. Air Force from Oklahoma and served with the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On November 3, 1967, he piloted an O-2A Skymaster (serial number 67-21328) on a combat mission over the Gulf of Tonkin off North Vietnam's coast. During the mission, the Skymaster was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft artillery, killing Maj Egger. Search and rescue efforts following the crash were unsuccessful. In 1994, a joint U.S./Vietnamese investigative team recovered a set of remains that analysts later identified as those of Maj Egger.

Major Egger is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
