Seaman Apprentice Peter Chan entered the U.S. Navy from California and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA 34). On September 25, 1972, while the carrier was operating in the Gulf of Tonkin off the North Vietnamese coast, he was blown overboard in the vicinity of (GC) 48Q YE 800 900 when he walked behind the exhaust of a jet aircraft. He was spotted in the water after going overboard, but rescuers were unable to locate him when they reached the scene. He was not recovered and remains unaccounted for. Today, Seaman Apprentice Chan is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
