Forty-eight years ago today, Radio Hanoi broadcast a recorded Christmas message from a prisoner of
war to his mother and four sisters in rural Massachusetts.

“Dear Mum and kids,” the message began. “On the occasion of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays,
I have been allowed to write a message to let you know that I am in good health and have been well
provided for with food and medical care.”...
